This is the comparison that matters if you have already decided to pay a premium annual fee. Both cards give you lounge access, a travel credit, and transferable points. The differences come down to how the credit works, how strong the protections are, and what you pay for authorized users.

Where the fee difference actually shows up
- ›The Sapphire Reserve carries the higher annual fee of the two, so it needs to deliver more value to break even.
- ›The Venture X travel credit is tied to Capital One Travel bookings. The Sapphire Reserve credit applies to travel purchases more broadly, which is easier to use if you book direct with airlines and hotels.
- ›Authorized users are the quiet difference. The Venture X includes them at no additional cost with lounge access, while the Reserve charges per additional user. If two or more people need lounge access, that gap adds up fast.
- ›The Venture X pays anniversary bonus miles each renewal year, which the Reserve does not match.
- ›The Reserve's travel protections, including primary rental car coverage, are the strongest here. If you rent cars or book expensive trips, price that in as real value rather than a nice-to-have.
Venture X for value and families. Sapphire Reserve for protections and flexibility.
The Venture X wins on cost efficiency. A lower premium fee, anniversary miles, and free authorized users with lounge access make it the easier card to justify for most travelers, especially anyone traveling with a partner or family.
The Sapphire Reserve wins on flexibility and coverage. Its travel credit is not locked to a portal, its protections are stronger, and Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partners are hard to beat for anyone who books award flights seriously.
If you can only carry one and you are optimizing value per dollar of fee, take the Venture X. If you book direct, rent cars often, and want the best protections, take the Reserve.

What I carry, and why
I carry the Capital One Venture X. Once I compared what I actually use - the travel credit, anniversary miles, and lounge access that extends to authorized users - it was the cheaper way to get the perks I use every year.
The Sapphire Reserve is a genuinely excellent card, and if I booked more travel direct rather than through a portal, the more flexible credit and stronger protections would be a real argument to switch.
Pick the one whose credits match how you already book travel. That single question decides this comparison more than any earn rate.

Is the Venture X or the Sapphire Reserve the better premium travel card?
The Venture X is the cheaper premium card and includes authorized users at no additional cost, which suits families and couples. The Sapphire Reserve costs more but its travel credit applies broadly to travel purchases rather than only inside a booking portal, and its protections are stronger.
Which card has better lounge access?
Both include Priority Pass. The Venture X adds Capital One Lounges and Plaza Premium, and includes authorized users. The Sapphire Reserve adds Chase Sapphire Lounges. The better answer depends on which lounges exist in the airports you actually fly through.
Do I need to book through a portal to use the travel credit?
With the Venture X, the annual travel credit applies to bookings made through Capital One Travel. The Sapphire Reserve's travel credit applies automatically to a broad range of travel purchases, which is more flexible.
Which card is better for rental cars?
The Sapphire Reserve is known for primary rental car coverage and broad travel protections. If rental car coverage and trip protections are a priority, that tips the comparison toward the Reserve.
